Huntington’s Awareness Month 2025

Huntington’s Awareness Month 2025

This May, we’re proud to support Huntington’s Awareness Month 2025. To mark the occasion, on 15th May, the CareFlex team will be holding a plant sale, bake sale and selling wristbands. We’ll be raising awareness and donations for the Huntington’s Disease Association. All for a fantastic cause.

Who are the Huntington’s Disease Association?

The Huntington’s Disease Association is working to improve care and support for people living with Huntington’s disease. Their vision is “Together we will build a better life for anyone affected by Huntington’s disease.” They’re dedicated to supporting individuals and families, educating professionals, campaigning to challenge discrimination and improve access to essential services.

What is Huntington’s Disease?

Huntington’s disease is a rare, genetic neurodegenerative condition. It’s typically inherited and affects a person’s psychiatric, cognitive and motor functions. Often presenting with a distinctive movement disorder called chorea. A pattern of involuntary, uncoordinated movements. Every child of an affected parent has a 50% chance of inheriting the faulty gene, sadly there’s currently no cure.

Globally, it affects around 2.71 people per 100,000[1].

Specialist Seating and Huntington’s Disease

Seating plays a vital role in the wellbeing and quality of life for people with Huntington’s. Even when individuals remain mobile, maintaining a stable, upright posture can be challenging and exhausting. Muscle tone changes, involuntary movements and reduced range of motion mean regular seating assessments are crucial to support comfort, posture and independence for as long as possible.

How are we helping?

We understand that no two people with Huntington’s will present the same, but certain challenges are consistent, that’s why after plenty of research, testing and feedback we developed our Huntington’s Chair, the AlphaCare II. With a deep understanding of the unique postural care needs associated with Huntington’s, we believe it’s very important to be part of the ongoing conversation, supporting those affected and those who care for them. If you’d like to learn more about the AlphaCare II, its features and how it can help with postural care, look at our product page.

Training Webinar

On the 15th we’ll also be hosting a special webinar featuring guest speaker, Alex Fisher. We’re giving healthcare professionals the opportunity to explore Challenges in Positioning in Huntington’s Disease (HD) with one of the UK’s leading experts.

Alex is a Senior Occupational Therapist within the West Midlands Neuropsychiatry Service, which also includes the Regional HD Service. In 2022, she was proudly awarded the inaugural Health & Social Care Excellence Award by the Huntington’s Disease Association. Alongside her clinical work, Alex is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer and HD Module Lead for the MSc Neuropsychiatry course at the University of Birmingham and delivers training for occupational therapists on the HDA’s Professional Course. In 2022, Alex began volunteering for Factor H, a humanitarian charity supporting individuals with HD in Latin America. Alex was invited to lead the Caregiver project in Venezuela and in late 2024, received the Amgen Prize for Rare Diseases for her innovative solution.

Expect expert insights into positioning challenges, practical advice and a live Q&A.
